THE MAIN IDEA
MISSION STATEMENT
The Main Idea provides economically disadvantaged girls with a summer camp experience that helps build self-confidence, promotes leadership skills and creates a trusting and secure environment, all within the natural splendor of the Maine woods.
The empowerment that comes from learning to resolve conflicts and make productive life choices teaches the girls to respect one another and enables them to build a community upon which they can rely all year round.
My mitzvah project is The Main Idea at Camp Walden.
The Main Idea is a ten-day sleepaway camp program for girls who normally could not afford a camp experience. Going to sleepaway camp has had an amazing, positive impact on my life.
I have met great friends, learned many new things, and made unforgettable memories. I feel that every girl deserves the opportunity to experience the fun of camp, so I am raising money to help send girls to camp.
In the summer of 2018, I will also be old enough to be a junior counselor at Main Idea, so I can personally take part in helping other girls enjoy all that camp has to offer.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Main Idea girls have the opportunity to experience a wide range of programs and activities during their 10-day stay with us. They live in a bunk with about ten other girls their age, a junior staff member, and three or four qualified staff members.
Their day is filled with six 45-minute activity periods that are structured in a way to ensure quality time for the instructors to teach new skills, for the girls to have ample to time to practice their newly learned skills and to have plenty of time for fun.
The girls are divided into several activity groups (different from their bunk groups) which travel around to scheduled activities.
The activities include having fun down on the water front, expressing the creative side through dancing, acting and arts & crafts, and playing land sports and tennis, scrambling up on the climbing wall, riding horses, and shooting archery.
